AIS

AIS has revelutionised safety at sea with systems where the name, course and speed of any commercial vessel is transmitted by VHF radio to allow other maritime users to see what's out there on an AIS receiver display and thereby make safety decisions, Small vessels can also fix transponder units which make them visible on navigation displays fitted to other vessels.
